The situation
Kiln sells stoves, tents and cookware to people who buy them in the places they will use them: campsites, lay-bys and villages with one bar of signal. Their old store weighed 9 MB per product page and timed out before the Add to cart button loaded.
The approach
I rebuilt the storefront headless, with server-rendered product pages under 180 KB, images that arrive in order of importance, and a cart that works offline and syncs when signal returns. Every page was tested on a throttled 3G profile before it shipped.
What we cut
Autoplay video, three tracking scripts and a carousel nobody used. The product photography got bigger, not smaller.
What changed
Mobile conversion rose 22% in the first quarter, and time to first product image fell from 7.8 s to 1.1 s on a rural connection.
